You might not admit it, but you know when looking at a storm warning, you are hoping It comes straight at your town – If it’s a hurricane, a category 1 is a disappointment- You want a REAL hurricane- If it swerves at the last minute and goes to another state, you are most definitely disappointed- There’s no mistaking the admiration heard in people’s voices when discussing devastating storms, and the dismissal in voices when discussing storms that didn’t deliver the goods- “Oh, Hurricane Floyd? It was just a bunch of rain and some flooding- Fran? That was a real deal! That church steeple was literally blown off and was lying in the middle of the street!” What are we hoping for, to become a member of some special exclusive group of storm survivors? I believe it’s more than just wanting to get out of going to work or school for a few days- If that’s all it is, then we wouldn’t root for higher wind speeds and greater tide surges- A simple category one would suffice in knocking out power and giving us time away from work or school- When you read about an asteroid making its way by our planet, you know you scan that article and hope for a collision, the bigger the better- How many movies have been made off of that premise? It’s romanticized and pined for- Is that why we elect leaders we know are not good for Humanity? Are we hoping their impulsive and sadistic natures will spark a chain of events ending in nuclear destruction? Why? Are we that miserable, or just bored? Maybe we’re looking for more meaningful relationships that are born out of tragedy or the true honest work that has to be done after a tree lands in your living room- After 9/11, the country came together and made an unpopular president popular- After a tornado ravages a town, there are weeks of news stories about communities coming together to rebuild- So when we’re rooting for these catastrophic events to unfold, we are just rooting for somebody to hit the big reset button to give us a clean slate- Or maybe it’s a guilt complex from the repressed knowledge of all the continued horrors we inflict upon ourselves and our planet, and we yearn for our just desserts…
